We often believe that, especially in caregiving situations, we are supposed to sacrifice our lives for other people – but this is not what we are about here at the life compass. As we grow older, and the people we care for grow older, we often get asked to do things. Before we act we need be honest with ourselves about:
- who do I want to be in these experiences?
- who do I want to be after these experiences?
There are 3 answers we can give in any situation. We can say “yes, here is what I’m willing to do.” We can say “no, I need to protect my own well-being.” We can say “how? If I say yes, here’s how.”
There is a dance between yes and no because circumstances and resources change. By being honest with yourself about what can you do in your life in this moment, communicating that with other people, and making a clear yes or no in what you are willing to contribute to someone’s life will help you on the journey to real life planning.
